DIY Paving Projects – How to Get a Professional Result

Adding a paved path or patio to your backyard can be a great way to create more usable space for your outdoor activities. Laying pavers is not as difficult as you might think, and with the right tools and materials, it’s a project that can be easily accomplished in just one weekend. Here we will look at a helpful few tips for laying pavers around your home or property. Planning and Preparation Determine the area where you want to lay the pavers and measure it accurately. You'll also need to calculate the number of pavers you'll need. Prepare the ground by removing any vegetation or debris and excavating to the appropriate depth. Base Preparation Create a solid base for the pavers by adding a layer of crushed rock or gravel to the excavated area. Compact the base material with a plate compactor to ensure a level surface. Sand Layer Add a layer of sand over the base material and use a screed board to level it out. The sand layer should be about an inch thick. Lay the Pavers Starting at a corner, begin laying the pavers in the desired pattern. There are several common paving patterns used in construction, including: • Running bond pattern - This is the most common and simplest paving pattern. It involves laying rectangular or square pavers in a staggered pattern, with each row offset by half the length of the paver. This creates a brick-like appearance that is often used for sidewalks, patios, and driveways. • Herringbone - This pattern is created by laying rectangular pavers in a 45-degree angle to create a zigzag pattern. It is often used for driveways, walkways, and patios because it provides excellent traction and stability. It’s also aesthetically pleasing. • Basket weave - This pattern is created by alternating sets of two rectangular pavers that are placed perpendicular to each other. It creates a simple, yet elegant look that is often used for small patios and walkways. • Circular - This pattern involves laying pavers in a circular shape, often with a centre focal point. It is a popular choice for garden paths, small patios, and outdoor seating areas. • Random pattern - This pattern involves using a mix of pavers in different shapes and sizes to create a random, natural-looking pattern. It is often used for larger patios and outdoor living spaces. If necessary, cut the pavers using a saw or chisel to fit them around the edges of the area or to make adjustments to the pattern. Use a rubber mallet to tap each paver into place, making sure they are level with each other. Check the level frequently to ensure an even surface. Fill the Joints Once all the pavers are in place, sweep sand over the surface to fill the joints. Use a plate compactor to vibrate the pavers and help settle the sand further into the joints. Seal the Surface Sealing isn’t essential however it will help to protect the surface and enhance its appearance. It’s important to remember that these are general steps and specific details may vary depending on the type of pavers and the particular project.
